The problem

American healthcare providers spend hundreds of billions a year creating and optimizing health insurance claims. Payers spend a similar amount adjudicating them.

AI was supposed to fix this, but really it’s making things worse. Providers use AI to improve claims; payers deploy AI to deny them. Both sides spend more; neither gains. So we’re collapsing the middle of this negative-sum system and building the infrastructure that makes healthcare billing deterministic.

We’re converting payer policies and medical notes into computable contracts grounded in formal logic - exposed via API and MCP, evaluated at the point of care, optimized for token efficiency, latency, and accuracy. We’re replacing the adversarial back-and-forth between providers and payers with transparent, auditable, pre-agreed rules.

When we succeed, we’ll materially reduce the cost of care for the American patient.

About us

On September 18 we announced a $100 million commitment led by our new partners at Thoreau, alongside our existing investors Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments, Twine Ventures, and Seedcamp.

Ten months ago this company was two people and a question: will my insurance cover this procedure? Now we are hiring across New York and London to become the intelligence platform both sides of American healthcare build upon.

The role

You are our first commercial hire. Until now Sohum (CEO, MD) has run every demo, priced every pilot and sent every contract. You take over from the demo onwards and own each deal to signature.

You report to Sohum. You work with a BRK to book your first meetings and you set targets, lists and messaging. AI agents keep the CRM clean and write the weekly pipeline report. The Chief of Staff supports the back half of your deals with pricing analysis, order forms and counsel; you run the negotiation and the close.

The split we’re envisioning (it will flex as we scale):

  • Pipeline and closing (~60%). Demos, sandbox evaluations, proposals, pricing conversations, negotiation and the close plan from verbal yes to signature.

  • Pilots to paid (~20%). Run live pilots with our clinical and engineering team, hold the buyer to their own success criteria, and convert them to annual contracts on time.

  • Product feedback (~20%). Turn what you hear in calls and evaluations into specific, ranked requests to engineering, and test what ships against the buyer’s data before they do.

Not in this job: cold outreach (the agency does it), managing a team on day one (there isn’t one yet).

Where it goes

This is the first seat on a sales team. Close the first cohort of annual contracts and the natural next seat is Head of Sales, hiring the team that runs your playbook. Staying the senior seller on our largest accounts is a real path here too.

About you

  • 5+ years of healthcare sales.

  • You have carried a quota, run your own negotiations and closed contracts you can describe deal by deal: what it took, what broke.

  • You can demo an API product to a CTO and a CFO in the same meeting and hold the interest of both.

  • Your product instincts reach engineering as specifics: which field, which payer, which workflow, why it lost the deal.

  • You love to write. Most of our selling, and most of our thinking, happens in writing; we favor memos over slides.

  • You are AI-native - when you face hard problems repeatedly, your first instinct is to ask how you can automate the solution.

  • You are in New York, or moving here.

Not a fit if

  • You want a VP title and a team before you have carried a number here.

  • You need marketing to hand you a warm pipeline.

  • You’re looking for a 9-to-5.

What we offer

  • $180k-240k base salary, $360k-480k on-target earnings (50/50 base and commission) + meaningful equity

  • New York, in-office, with some flexibility

  • 100% medical, dental & vision insurance coverage

  • Company laptop and a generous software budget

  • Learning and development budget

We also offer a $10k referral bonus (after the referred hire finishes a 3 month probation period). Penelope Health is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
